Argh! Need help with a VW Golf problem!
David Jenkins - 13/4/07 at 03:32 PM

I'm having a bad Friday 13th - I think my daughter's VW Mk4 Golf GTi is cursed (or it knows it's going to be sold very soon, and is out for vengeance...)

Decided to go and get a slow puncture sorted, so earlier on I wound the windows down to cool the car. Went to wind the driver's window up - it came up a little way, then it decided that something was blocking it and went down again, then when I tried again - bang! and the glass dropped down into the door.

Apparently the electric window regulator mechanism is a cat's-cradle of cables and pulleys. Trouble is, I don't know how to get in to take a look. I found the 3 screws at the base, and the one by the hinges. Tried to pull the door card up to release it, but something's holding it near to the door pull. There's a panel of switches on the door pull that MAY come off, but I don't want to pull too hard and break it.

Does anyone have any clues about getting the door card off a Mk4 Golf? Or a link to a website that could help me?

My last resort (before the VW garage) is to go and get a Haynes manual - but I'd rather not as the car's supposed to be going up for sale in the next week or so.

All help appreciated...

David

Id be very suprised if there went some arround the internal handle.

Might be hidden underneath or behind blanking plugs

Absolutely spot on - that allowed me to take the skin off.

As others have said - the plastic clips that support the door have broken. Bloody awful design (again)!

Thanks to all - off to the VW garage tomorrow, to shout at someone - anyone...

David

P.S. If you hadn't realised by now, I am hugely unimpressed by the quality of VWs - cheap and nasty plastic to save a fraction of a Euro on each car... and bloody difficult to fix when the plastic bits break...

I have owned a series of Toyota cars, and had to fix one or two problems over the years. I have found the fixes really easy, and the materials they used were totally appropriate for the job. Even my wife's Matiz is more reliable, and very easy to repair!

Good call...

Best of luck with your moan.

My lads VW had a similar problem.

Obviously a design flaw and I bought a repair kit. Can't remember why but having booked it into the VW dealer he called me and said I had to have a regulator for an extra £45.

Cost us around £165 to get it fixed.

I complained to VW and basically they just told me to F off.

Great customer service.

I know one thing for certain - I'll never buy a VW!
Totally over-rated.

I went searching round that site, and also found this link.

Putting the 2 together gave me all the info I needed, complete with full-colour pictures!

Cost me £33.53 inc. VAT, and took me about 2 hours of "slow and careful" work.

If anyone here has a VW Mk 4 Golf or Jetta then they should securely bookmark this site - there's a heap of VERY useful info in there.

VW Vortex Master List

Thanks to everyone - great relief - now to sell the damn thing!

Anyone want to buy a VW Golf Gti 1.8 Turbo with all the fancy accessories?

This is precisely why I did not listen to people a few years ago, when they told me to buy a VW Passat instead of my first Audi. "They are basically the same" - NOT!

They are good - follow the instructions exactly as shown and you'll find it easy.

Worth looking at the "required tools" list before you start - apart from the Torx bits, most tools are fairly standard issue. In your case, you'll probably need a roll of good-quality duct tape - honest! In my case, the window had dropped so I had to take glass right out of the door, so I didn't need the tape.

Have fun.

Probably a total of 2 hours, but I wasn't rushing. It was a nice sunny day, the birds were singing... oh, sorry.

If I had to do it again I could probably do it in under 1 hour.
