cadebytiger - 29/4/07 at 04:36 PM

I am cleaning my webbercarbs and the book says to use petrol and thinners.

I don't have any thinnner but i do have access to a lab. was wondering if anyone knew what thinners are made from?

i would assume that thinners are just alcohol/acitone/methanol based product but i might be wrong, i just assumed a thinner was just a solvent ...

i think you are right.

I used propan-2-ol for getting oil of the sump. worked treat! Maybe something like that would be best.

technically water is a solvent.

I guess something like white spirit, but don't trust me on that, i wouldn't like to be responsible for damaging your webber carbs

Thinners is a specific thing - cellulose thinners which amongst other uses is used for thinning cellulose paint and glass fibre resin - rather than just any old thinner. Its also good for glue and sticky stuff removal but it will dissolve the paint on your car so be careful. I thought acetone was the thing to clean carbs with - it certainly dissolves that brown dried petrol residue you get on carbs - (its nail varnish remover). Data sheet for thinners here http://www.birdbrand.co.uk/msds/Cellulose%20Thinners.pdf
