Sorn - what'll they do ?
givemethebighammer - 12/5/07 at 07:50 PM

I bought a motorbike about 8 weeks ago, picked it up in a van and put it straight in the garage when I got it home. It hasn't moved since. I went to tax it online today and the DVLA web page informed me that the bike had not be taxed or sorn since 8/6/06, this was an offence and the DVLA might be contacting me about it.

what's the worst they'll do ?

hmmm Bought a non-running Porsche 924 about a month ago. Got the V5 and the guy I bought it from had never registered it in his name.

Being an idiot, forget to register it myself.

So the V5 had the previous previous owners signiture on it with a date of 31/7/06. I signed next to it with the date I bought it.

V5 shows me owning it since the actual date I bought it.

i reckon you'll be okay if you can prove how long you've owned it.

B*ll0cks

You've have thought the DVLA would have given me a reminder when they sent me the V5 document.

I taxed my bike just for the summer two years ago, missed the renewal by 2 weeks... £80 fine, thats more than 1 years tax, £69 I think is was...... Now I Sorn everything on line the second the tax is out, even if I am taxing the next week.

Confused but excited. - 12/5/07 at 08:54 PM

If you have only had it 8 weeks, they can't hold you responsible for not taxing it prior to the purchase date.
Point them in the direction of the vendor. You obviously have witnesses to the purchase, or I assume you will have in the very near future.

Yep, tell em you only got it 8 weeks ago, if you have a receipt to proove it that will help. In that situation they'll probably just get you to tax it from 8 weeks ago (they like a continuous run of tax/sorn you see).

When I got my bike, the tax had run out the month before I picked it up. For the sake of about 5 quid compared to speaking to the dealer/dvla/post office grannie I decided just to get it taxed from the previous month.
