I'm set to go over to Germany again this summer with the uni motor club and spend a week at the Nurburgring. We went last year but I made the
grave error of not taking a car. Big mistake! Therefore this year I must have myself a car to thrash around for at least few laps and get me too and
from Germany. Unfortunately the current daily driver, a 1.0l fiat uno, is not quite up to the job and the likelyhood of the seven being finished is
pretty damn slim.
The criteria:
- £800 to £1000 max (preferably less!)
- At least 15 years old (classic insurance)
- Not rediculous (i'm only 20)
- Fun!
Current favourites are 205 GTi, maybe a Mk1 MR2 and possibly even an E30 318i s BM.
So, what do you guys reckon. Are there any undiscovered little gems that are worth a look?

Should be able to pick up a ratty alfa v6 for around that
An old Big 6 / V8 Beemer should be had for that money...
Mk1 Golf GTI fast and comfortable get a rough looking but mechanically OK for that kind of money.

Im off a week on fri (as a passenger) and out of the 7 cars going, 1 rs turbo blew itself apart when its wastegate stuck last week, another rs turbo needs gearbox changing, a pulsar currently has its engine out after the clutch went, and one person still needs to buy a car. A 106 gti/saxo vts would be a great choice, though not "classic", i had one when i was 20, and the insurance wasnt too bad, it was bad, just not too bad!! But great fun.
Try a Rover 1.6 gti, 3 door coupe.
1600 Honda engine sohc 16 valve. Safe if the cambelt breaks. Goes like sh*t off a shovel. We've got a '91 model that cost £400 4 years ago
with 65000 on the clock.
So cheap, cheerful and unburstable. Just trawl e-bay and you should find a good-un.
RWD seems like more fun to me. Get a BMW! Then strip the thing, there's a LOT of weight that can be stripped off! Especially if you're
getting a 5-series (mmmm, V8 goodness!) They handle great and have decent power...

BMW 316/318 would get my vote as there's hundreds of them out there and parts are really cheap from eurocarparts etc.
you are on the right lineswith 205gti.
rwd would be nice but not many that handle and stay in one piece on that budget.
most of the cars other have mentioned don't even attempt to handle well!!!!
Another vote for 205GTI. On a track, for the money, they are hard to beat. Just don't expect to be hitting 150mph down the straights!
If you get a half reasonable one then you shouldn't lose money on it either. The mint ones fetch several thousand now!
