What do you think of your manufacturer?
oliwb - 19/5/07 at 07:05 AM

I know this is going to be a controversial topic but following on from a heated debate I was wanting to know what people think of their manufacturers and the service/quality they provide. I'm only asking as I personally think there are two sides to every story. I have had good and awfull service from Tiger and I'm sure many people have had the same experiences with other kit producers. This is NOT a slagging match I'd just like to open up a discussion about any times you received exceptionally good service or quality and any times when it was lacking? Also what do people think on the whole about their manufacturers. Would you buy bits from them at a greater cost to yourself to help support them? (If this thread goes silly its getting deleted - so there is no point in trying to provoke ppl I'd just like to get an idea of what everyone thinks of them. Could be interesting! Oli.

Service from MNR has been great.
There were some issues but Chris worked really hard to resolve them

graememk - 19/5/07 at 07:13 AM

not had a single prob with MK, i called them the other day about going up to see them to get the car set up and they said just turn up sat morning and we'll do it for you

I suppose everyone will have good and bad experiences with every supplier so its just a case of thats how the world works good and bad on differing days.

I'm a prime example I get decent service from GTS while others don't/haven't, i don't know why..

Totally agree, Ive never had a problem with GTS either, bought the chassis kit from Luego, and got a lot sof bits and pieces from GTS. Never had a problem with either.

Excellent service time after time from MAC#1 both Colin and Mark.

The real test was one cold wet wintery day when i was due to go for SVA trying to get my pinto started (stuck open exhaust valve on 1 cyliner and open exhaust valve on another plus worn piston rings all unknown to me) when Mark had foolishly let me have his mobile number, and I rang him at 6 in the morning. His wife Sam answered the phone and woke him up to talk to me.

Didnt make the SVA but he was on the phone to me for a good half hour and he seemed happy to help.

I never had an issue with MK, They were brilliant but from my experience MAC#1 seem to come out on top for service.

Bought from Luego, and all was ready on the day and all required parts were there.

However they did go bust a month later!!!

I have not needed to go back to them for anything, so as a one stop shop it was no problem.

I realise that is not always an option for most as many people build kits over many years and prefer to do it in stages.
I think if (when ) i build another kit I will try to do the same. Save up like mad and buy what I need in one go . I think doing this you have more power and are almost guaranteed better service because if they dont get it right first time they don't get a sale.
Another advantage is they dont have you over a barrell, if you buy just the chassis they know very well you have no option but to come back for pannels etc so you are committed to their product.

Maybe I'm too cynical.

Ditto Marks comments about GTS. Never had any major issues. But I can admit that sometimes Darren doesnt answer emails as quickly as you would hope. I dont have a problem with this, and as such if I really need to speak to him, phone him.

I have also had good service from MK engineering and MNR on odd occasions.

My expectations from all manufacturers I have dealt with have been met.

Quality wise, I cannot fault any of the companies I have dealt with.

I've had great service from MAC#1 and MK.

Ok service from STUART TAYLOR.

Very poor service from TIGER.

I hope no one take this as a personal comment

but theres a lot of people who build kit cars and they dont half put up with some shite ie which they wouldnt put up with in the "REAL WORLD"

awful organisation on the manafacturers behalf

forgetting parts in kits when youve travelled quite a long way

waiting for parts for months on end when youve paid

and yet you all seem to want to back off the companies and say they things like

there Busy give em time
there a great bunch of lads aahhhh!!!
theyve got loads of orders on

would you put up with the same from a company in Every Day life =NO!

all people expect is a bit off honesty

no one minds waiting for parts but when they totally fob you off with stupid answers and people believe them

I ordered an Exhaust off Martin Keenan as someone needed to borrow it
and he did it for me quick no probs fantastic

I also wanted a roll bar off him and he was honest he said Im busy for a week or two can I do you one this week

absolutely no probs

ordered a Sprocket adaptor from MNR the other day
arrived in the post next day brilliant!

its not the next day or two week delivery thats needed its the communication

chris( now everyone will blame me for the above or Im lying hehe)

My manufacturer is a really top bloke. Could be a bit faster and it would help if he didn't keep making design changes . He does seem to make every effort to resolve mistakes and hide the evidence!

Costs, well they have increased at a a rate similar to the inflation rate of a dodgy African state. Much can be attributed to design changes during construction however building a spares kit that will provide almost a complete donor kit does seem somewhat extravagant as does purchasing another of the same kind of item cheaper on ebay with the excuse that this will reduce the actual cost of the finished car, maybe this has something to do with the ever growing spares pile

Oh the pleasures of a self-build, no one else to blame!

Luego were good for me. Although they did sell my side panels to someone else which wasnt really a problem for me.

GTS served me well apart from a long refund process for parts not supplied. The parts i did get were very good.

MK and mnr have been superb.

JoelP - 19/5/07 at 04:29 PM

i dont think ive ever had bad service from any supplier. You always get better service if they know you or if you've been to them in the past, hence i usually call MNR if i want stuff, as they know me and i like them.

t.j. - 19/5/07 at 07:52 PM

Parts are costly around here,

Called Tiger here and they where not really interrested in delivering parts.
Then we have VM77; too expensive
Irmscher; see VM77
Donkervoort; can't buy a kit
Caterham; see VM77
MNR; not around here
MK indy; not asked
Dax; i bought it allmost

But i'm Dutch, so i build my own.
Best service, i look good after myself

David Jenkins - 19/5/07 at 08:27 PM

Yep - nobody to blame but myself...

The only 'specially made' bits I bought were the GRP nose and wings from Triton. No complaints there...
