My wife has a '95 Pug 106. No ABS, discs on the front and drums on the back.

All of a sudden it's not stopping, at all!

Took a quick look at it last night, and I can sink the pedal all the way to the floor. As I did this I could hear a faint farty noise from the master cylinder. Took the top off that and the fluid level was noticably down (although not far enough to make the light come on).

Walked round the car and there was a puddle of brake fluid by the rear wheel, coming out of the bottom of the drum.

I've assumed its the seals on the rear cylinder, so have got one of them from the factors this morning.

However is the rear cylinder going a symptom of something else, rather than the actual problem? Don't really want to fit the new cylinder if the M/C is faulty and going to bust this one too!

I thought all cars now had dual circuit brakes? The fault is on the back drivers side brake, and the Pug M/C has four outlets on it. Yet it just doesn't stop at all!

i wouldnt have thought you have a mc problem, they are fairly reliable on the pugs.. it will be just a cylinder seal let go thats causing your problem.. very unlikely to be anything more sinister

I had an AX (basically the same car, but uglier) many years ago, it did exactly the same thing. Replaced the cylinder and it ran fine forever after (until I crashed it that is...)

Yes just a wheel cylinder (better still fit a pair).

Once you have the cylinder fitted and bled for peace of mind you can tet the master cylinder by putting gentle pressure on the pedal, if it very slowly sinks you have a problem if the pedal is constant all is OK.

I did a "Haynes 3 Spanner" job, without too much swearing, only 1 additional trip to Halfords (to get a 32mm socket) and only having to drill out 2 rusted bolts!

As they said, usually salve seal has gone.

I've had both rears on the ashtray fail simulatenously which was not nice.

One thing to watch out for is, if brake fluid is comming out of a rear slave that you may need to change your drum shoes if they got too covered .
