I had the water pump go on my Focus TDCi yesterday. Although I didn't know it at the time. Engine cut out whilst travelling. I pulled over and tried to restart, but all I could hear was grinding and crashing. Sounded terminal

Garage has said they won't know the damage until they fit a new pump and try to get it running tomorrow.

Anyone had a similar incident with the TDCi.

The waterpump is often run from the cambelt - hope this isnt the case with your engine!

Water pump is run from the auxiliary belt on the TDCi as far as I know. Dont quote me though.

I dont think its all that common. Try a google search. Had no trouble with our, now, 6 year old TDCi focus and havent heard of it before.

Obviously if the pump fails and you overheat the engine the consequences will be bad on whatever engine you have.

Yer right Flak the water pump is driven off the auxillary belt.

Not really related but there were loads of water pump failures on the V6 which had a plastic impeller which used to shatter - cured with changing to a metal impeller.

I hope the prognosis is good

It's just over 5 years old, 75k miles so some wear and tear expected.

Garage did say new timing belt kit was required when fitting the new one, which to me implies that it was driven from that, but I'll know more later.

I'll update here with the prognosis, just for info.

The timing belts, idlers and pump are quite often changed at the same time. On my Audi this is the case and if you see the abuse the sprung idlers get on a diesel then you'll understand why!

No terminal damage as far as I'm aware. I'm yet to see breakdown of cost on invoice but final cost was just over £410.00 (Parts and labour to repair). That's without the £94 recovery and £86 car hire for 2 days.

There goes any food for the kids for the next couple of months

Just had a look at the focus manual, for that price they may have changed the timming belt, otherwise it looks like a scoosh to do it, the belt's a recommended check and replace.
