powder coating

i have finally got my chassis sorted, took me two months to hand paint it with a primer and then hammer***te and what does it do, it comes off just by scratching with a finger nail ( not happy ) i have therefore had it powder coated at mk motorcycles at shirebrook and they have done a 100% job i can now start to get things put together. i would like to say thanks to the wife for sending me to mk to get it done. ( i am now happy )

Hammerite takes a couple of weeks to go proper off. Did you scratch too soon?

Either way - powdercoat is better!

Horses for courses, hammerite is designed for painting rusty metal and as such doesn't need any self etching properties. It is totally unsuitable for painting nice smooth new chassis.

There is a product called chassis black, but I cannot remember what that is designed for

Yep, I've gone right off using Hammerite for similar reasons. I found Dulux Weathershield black gloss to be really good as a top coat with an etch primer underneath. Powder coat is probably best though albeit a bit more difficult to repair if you damage it.

Quick tip - use foam pipe lagging to protect your chassis tubes when fitting the engine and other large metallic parts. You can buy it at B&Q in meter lengths for not much money.

Craig.

Can I ask how much you paid for the powder coating?
