whilst they're obviously similar concepts i have to say i think this looks much nicer than the MEV. though that may be partly to do with being single seater and therefore "sleaker".

still, i see no problem with it being a clonoid of the Atom. Most peoples cars on here are made to look like the Lotus 7 so originality isn't really preeched

I like it.

Tralfaz - 29/6/07 at 02:31 PM

I mentioned in a previous thread, that the intention had not originally been for the car to have an exposed chassis, I was looking at designing something like the the MK Sprint R, but with some margin of side impact protection.

I started adding something similar to trusswork or stage rigging to the sides, planning on skinning it, but whilst playing around with renders decided I liked the look.

I make no claims of the exoskeleton as being an original idea or new thinking, new is almost impossible these days... That is why the Atom is so striking. (Though as a form, it can be kind of ugly).

All the Best,

B

I see transparent wishbone attachements are becoming all the rage

Looks good though, I like it!

dont get me wrong its not hate....

well done to you for designing your own car.

my only dislike to it is the "blunted" nose, maybe a really tight radiused bend on the top rail might be a better look or at least an addition of a very small GRP nosecone/finisher to conceal that area.

Well you did imply all my hard work was as athetically pleasing as this.......

I did have a different nose at first, coming to a point, with a single center tube. This incited a chorus of cries suggesting it looked like a boat.... sigh...

Brian

Well I like it!
I prefer your nose to the imitation ice hockey mask look in the photo.
With that amount of side triangulation you don't have to worry about being T-boned either.
It also looks way better than the Atom.

P.S. Tell bigandy that he's behind the times. It's obvious that your wishbines are carbon fibre and rigidly attached to the chassi. They flex instead of pivoting. Bushes are so 2006!

I don't know why he is so worried about the bushes, yet seemingly unconcerned about the lack of dampers, springs or steering...

I really like the design. In my not so humble opinion, it looks way better than either the MEV or the Atom! Those bends may be a pain to get to look just right, but they do make for very nice lines! Ohh, and a bit of side-impact protection is a nie plus, too! What's the weight estimate for such a car? About 400kgs or so?

The carbon fibre bones rate of deflection acts as suspension thus eliminating the need for springs and dampers. the steering is telekinetic.
This is the 12st century you know!

I do like it, but I still think you are going to be really handy with a welder :-)
Very nice job.

As an aside, I don't think the mev is that bad.
I also can't see the resemblance between your car and the atom.

Build schedule ;-) ?

Omni - 29/6/07 at 09:01 PM

I think it is great. I would have one!!!!!

JoelP - 29/6/07 at 10:18 PM

a nice concept. Your radiator position would affect the shape a lot though, so worth placing it early whilst you are still flexible.

Tralfaz - 30/6/07 at 01:36 AM

Thanks for the comments Gents.

Regarding cooling, I have considered the possibility of mounting it up front , but also horizontally in the rear and ducting to it via a plenum fed from air above the drivers head.

Kind Regards,

Brian

New render to show the effect of clear side panels to improve aero and allow for lots of decals

Ctrl (-) to size down....

I am seriously DIGGING this shape!

I wonder what it would look like as a TRIKE...

hmmmm. Care to indulge me with a quick rendering?

Tralfaz - 28/7/07 at 10:45 AM

Thank you Steve.

I fiddled for a Few minutes with the 3 wheel idea but it doesn't really work (for me anyway)

sgraber - 28/7/07 at 11:36 PM

I understand what you are saying. There's something disproportionate about trikes to begin with. It's unfortunate because the trikes register as motorcycles and are therefore allowed in the HOV lanes in and around the city.

Just thinking out loud, I wish that there were a classification for ultra-light single seat cars that would allow them access to the hov lanes.

Any way to estimate the weight of your chassis?

Also, have you considered using QUAD components for suspension, brakes and uprights?

They appear to be very adjustable.
