My father has an Audi A6 2.5 Tdi Avant. '96 N reg, 6 speed manual box. 157K miles.

On way to Cornwall it appears the gearbox has failed. Just got home at 3am this morning (RAC) so no chance to fully diagnose yet. Suspicion is its lost its gearbox oil and done some damage internally. Do they have a bit of a weakness?

I dont suppose anyone knows of a spare gearbox for it do they or a decent breakers?

I think the engine code is AEL, and gearbox code is ARX if that means anything.
