locost/kit car on hold
ravingfool - 30/7/07 at 03:52 PM

finally come to terms with the sad realisation that I'm having to hold off on the kit car for the moment despite all the best made plans over the last year. Unfortunately time restraints and the requirement of having a working car meant I have had to face facts and put off the build for a year or so...

In the mean time I've bought a classic 1971 MGB GT to run and restore and a month after buying it seem to have it running well and hopefully reliably; having spent half of the last month with it off the road with all kinds of little things going wrong now the car is being driven properly instead of to the corner shop and back (woman did 6000 miles in the last 5 YEARS! crazy I've don't over a thousand since buying her!)

But now I'm already thinking ahead to the build and perhaps I can afford to keep this car (already attached to her) once the 7 is complete so I won't need a full windscreen etc and could really aim it for track days and stuff practicality! hmm, I'd like to go the full locost route but I don't know how to weld yet... I see courses in welding going on my xmas list this year!

Anyway, still reading the site and dreaming and planning for an eventual build of some sort!

It's funny you should say that... the devil on my left shoulder is trying to convince me to let her rot so that the only sensible thing to do is reuse the bits in a 7! On my other shoulder something is telling me that it's far to beautiful a car to let rot and gut when I could get something more suitable for that!

Nice. Its crying out for an RV8 conversion.

There are too many MGB's with a RV8... dare to be different.. install the running gear out of a BMW! Their V8 engines push ou nearly 300Hp..

she looks gorgeous ..... keep her long enough and you'll have something to practice your welding skills on (

if you want to be different, fit a type 9 gearbox and either a v6 or zetec.

can i be so bold to ask what she cost you.

Hmm some interesting ideas, but I think for the moment I'm intending not to spend too much money on her, and I need her to be on the road for the next year reliably, so nothing major makes sense at the moment (and would also eat into the budget for the any full build)

I've seen a couple of race prep'd BGTs and that road appeals to me, sticking with MG bits. Don't really fancy a V8 in her, don't think the handling will benefit from the extra weight, but a more powerful 4 pot, IRS and maybe LSD would be nice and it looks fairly simple to do the IRS mod...

Oh and I'm sure I'll have to do some welding on her at some point, and no I don't mind, past the initial English aversion to talking about money, bought her for about £2500.

edit* scrap what I said about extra weight, I was forgetting the RV8 actually ends up lighter than the 4 pot!

Nice!

One of the lads at PPC was sticking the engine out of a Rover 820 Turbo in an MGB. He thought the engine would bolt straight onto the existing gearbox. Should last all of 5 minutes.

Just leave as is, she's a peach. You can put an obscene engine in the locost when you build one!

What my twin said.
To butcher that would be sacrilege!
