A bit OT, but you could get a canon 400D for the same price as Canon are currently offering £50 cashback.

Panasonic DMC LC1, a bit old i.e 2 years, available of the eskip for about£400. best bit is the Leica lens and the manual handling, just like a proper old fashioned rangefinder or SLR.

Don't get carried away by the quoted number of megapixels. For starters some manufacturers are 'economical with the truth' with the headline mp figure. Some interpolate a larger output from a smaller sensor (i.e. make it up), others fiddle with non-square sensor pixels. The optics will make as much difference to the picture quality as a megapixel or two will when we're talking 8-10mp cameras, as will the metering systems on the camera. Try and find some reviews of different cameras to get a better idea of it's capabilities as a whole, and don't be scared of looking for second hand kit.
