Cheap turbo diesel
givemethebighammer - 7/9/07 at 08:00 PM

My friend is looking for a cheap second hand turbo diesel. Basically it should be cheap to buy (up to £2K), reliable and hopefully not need expensive repairs for a year or two.

So what makes / models have lost loads of value that he'll find a low-mid mileage bargain ?

Citroen Xantias go really cheap as people are scared of by the hydropeumatic suspension.

I used to have one and it was a great car.

If your friend doesn't mind the badge, Skoda Octavia Tdi's are starting to slip under the 2k limit.

Had mine for 7 years and 110k miles and I'd have another tomorrow.

Martin.

Another vote here for the Pug 306 1.9, or the Astra 1.7

Usual VW/Audi TDi as parts are very cheap from eurocarparts.co.uk don't go to the dealer!

TBH, everyone will have their recomendation, but it's more important at that price level to find a tidy car that's been well looked after and regularly serviced. IMHO 4 decent tyres on on a 2nd hand car are worth a lot.

The Ford and VX cars may be slightly cheaper on parts and servicing, but not by much if you shop around for what you need. VAG group cars have a good rep for reliability, but you will end up with an older, higher mileage car for the same money.

Finally, don't rule out a petrol car. Unless you're doing a good number of miles the higher purchase price, more frequent servicing interval and higher cost of diesel means it's not necessarily the cheaper total cost option over a given period.

Second that!

ABS wheel sensor for the Octavia - £50 + VAT from Skoda or £18 + VAT from GSF........

Guess who got my money.
