Can Anyone Recommend a Good Land Rover Forum
TGR-ECOSSE - 10/9/07 at 09:43 AM

As title. I am going to replace the rear body crossmember on my Discovery and would like to see if anybody has pictures of what is involved in doing the job. I will also be replacing the clutch soon and was wondering if its easier to take the engine out or the gearbox out. Have tried searching but am not finding much info so what is the best forum to use?

Thanks
Ronnie

ps Locost build on hold just now while i replace most parts on the disco

www.landyzone.co.uk is okay, or
www.discoveryownersclub.org I think they might want you to join tho
Difflock used to have a good forum, but not been on in a while so can't say for sure.

Cheers

Replacing chassis rear Xmember is okay if the body is good above it, I suspect the body above will be rotten and the Xmember will be okay. If its the body its a horrible job.

Replacing clutch, go from underneath, its not any more difficult than a normal car except for weight and an extra propshaft, so you need a decent trolly jack to balance it on ! also the big tube that straddles the chassis will be a tight fit so a little bottle jack and some blocks of wood the push the chassis apart or just hammer the bugger out.

2 days on Xmember, 1 full day clutch

Yes its the body xmember!!! I have a fair bit of experience of welding rust to fresh air but its the dismantling of parts with rusty bolts that look a pain!! I used to work for a clutch specialist so doing from underneath looks to be my best option.

PS. Thanks mark chandler for land rover info if you remember my post about the vibration on the discovery you suggested the diff. Well you were right. I got a complete good axle for £40 and its cost me about £200 for joints bushes drop links shock absorbers etc Thank god for paddock prices..
