As in how they mend petrol tanks in Mongolia.
Two intrepid guys are driving their 1903 Mercedes from Peking to Paris (well you would wouldn't you?) when in the middle of the Gobi wastelands
their petrol tank starts to leak. There not being a Mercedes dealer thereabouts they take it to a local garage who offer to fix the old one!
Unable to drain the tank two local mechanics proceed to fill the tank full of petrol. They stand it on end, the leak lowest with the open filler tube
uppermost. Gobi 1 lights the filler tube with a blowtorch whilst Gobi 2 gas-welds the split.
Pic. to prove it in Oct issue of Classic & Sports Car page 41. Definitely in the "don't try this at home" category.
Cheers, Pewe
PS see this has come up as "Trade ad?" wot advertising Gobi Garages???

Good story... but which bit is for sale?
Had my car fixed in Mongolia too after bending two con rods. They have the +ve and -ve the wrong way round when welding which is quite painful if you
touch the car!
Here are some pics of it in the garage Mongol Rally pics
Fair play to you for doing a run like that, must have been a gas.
Steve.
