Weird one this. My wife came in from work last night and spotted a flood in the bathroom. Opened up the airing cupboard to find the solder on a 15mm elbow fitting had sprung a tiny leak. Like a pin hole. It's in a 15mm pipe that runs from floor to ceiling and is very hot.

I rush around turning the water mains off and the heating off, but it doesn't stop. Then at the top of the airing cupboard I find an isolating valve. I turn that and a while later the water stops coming out. By this time its dark, cold and I'm ready for my bed.

So I turn the mains back on, no more leak. Then I turn the heating back on, no more leak. All of the taps work normally, giving out plenty of hot water. All the radiators are on.

This afternoon I have replaced the section of pipe, with new elbows etc. Opened the isolator back up, it filled up, from the top down. Few gurgles and everything works as normal.

All the taps still give hot water and all the radiators are hot with no cold spots at the top.

So where does this pipe go? It doesn't appear to go down to the boiler, as that only has two 22mm connections on it.

Do you have a combi boiler or is there a copper cylinder in the airing cupboard?

Where does the pipe go into the cylinder? Bottom, half way up, or top?

The pipe doesn't go into the cylinder, it just goes from the ceiling, through the airing cupboard and into the floor above the kitchen?

probably the rising vent to the heating header tank.be carefull though running the system with this pipe isolated could lead to all manor of nastiness

wouldn't be a vent in 15mm surely.??
could be feed to heating
might be a tee off the hot water vent??

Yep I would go with cold feed for central heating,I very much doubt a plumber would fit an open vent/expansion with 15mm.

If it is a Cold feed to the boiler it should be a Lockshield valve, (so it needs a key to operate it)
or atleast have the wheel head taken off to stop it being operated accidently,

Poor workmanship by whoever put that in, considering the consequences of having somebody shutting it.
