Sorry it's off topic up my friend's PC started in the middle of the night last night from a full shutdown - no spooks that we are aware of. lol

It then turned off and on and off and on - just powering down (not shutting down).

At first it got to the login prompt but began to get less and less far into the startup before turning off again.

She had to pull the plug and now will not start up at all.

Anyone got any ideas? I build my own PC so have basic knowledge ut don't really know where to start here.

Depends upon the board type. An ATX uses a relay (via on/off) to boot. Maybe connection to the board or the actual button itself is faulty. Remove the on/off button connector and see if the problem recurrs. If all is ok - there is your problem, cheap fix. That would be my first POC.

it on a LAN? Some MB have onLANwake up? Maybe the motherboard is having a bad day. if so unplug LAN and try again.

It wont be the PSU, the RAM, the HDD, the processor or the graphics card - so I'd start by swapping out the case (maybe a faulty front button) then the MB in case of a faulty conection on the MB with the front switches.

I think some BIOSs have options to turn the system on automatically - worth a look anyway.

A friend had a similar problem, tracked itdown to a faulty reboot button.

Mine had that problem about 3 months ago, didnt do anything about it, now it crashes all the time with a " boot problem" or summat, and then last week it caught fire in the middle of the night :

So my advice, what ever it is, get it sorted just incase lol

either faulty button (unlikly)
faulty psu
or lan/modem wakeup coming on for some reason.

Mine was swithcing itself off with alarming regularity - between 0 secs and 5 to 10 mins (but not on). A friend threw in another power supply unit (as Graememk mentioned), and (touch wood!!!!!) it's been fine since.
