
Do they make good track day cars?

They can be with a little work 
They are fun. I had a race with Ned on here in my 1600cc 5 speed MX5 and he was in a Pug 205 GTi and it was close!
They are great little cars - my first 'proper' car when I left uni was one.
Strip out the interior and fit some lightweight seats and, along with a bit of engine and chassis tweeking, it's be a perfectly good, balanced
track car.
If I get a job where I need a car to get to work (currently pedal power) - (oh, on a bike as well), I was thinking of selling the bitsablade (gasp)
and getting a MX5.
Stick a decent kit on it, play with the engine and track day it a lot (using up all the money from selling the bitsablade).
Any thoughts anyone?

Hi theres plenty of tuning parts for them available. And also a one make race championship in the uk to give you some ideas.
MX5 RACE LINK Has a forum a parts section inc all race parts like rollcages ect and cars forsale.

They are very very good cars. I had a lovely early Eunos Roadster - sadly no pics stll online. I also made the mistake of 'sticking a decent
kit on it' - don't do it, it's heavy and a pain in the backside. I still have an original front bumper, chin spoiler and full light
set in my parent's attic.
I'd still like another one now.
My g/f drives a Mk2.5. If you want a Mk1, my advice is get a fresh jap import - the spec will usually be higher and it won't have rusted.

The import to go for if you can find one is the S Special - this is the spec I had.
1800 engine and fully loaded with leather interior etc. (speakers mounted in the headrests are a
particularly nice touch)
Mine also had the mandatory road flare still in the glove box. This provided a short amount of fun!
Having said all of that ^^^
The 1.6 is arguably sweeter and for track work, you may want to source a base spec model sans electric wondowns and power assisted steering.
I want another one!!!!
