Tin top insurance renewal
DarrenW - 21/11/07 at 11:02 AM

Ive just moved house at same time insurance renewal was up. Renewal paperwork showed £506 (not bad for decent car insured for business etc so happy with that). However when i told them id moved 4 miles to other end of same town - they decided they wanted £640. Of course i wasnt happy.

Tried moneysuperarket.com - could get similar (not identical) policy for between 500 - 580. Phoned insurer back (Norwich Union Direct), they said they wont price match and considered £640 to be a fair price fo the policy offered. Women suggested trying Norwich Union Direct website - if cheaper policy comes up not ethe quote number, phone back and if like for like they will match that. Cut long story short - ive ended up getting the exact same policy through exact same insurer on the exact same telephone number for £528. £110 cheaper!

How mad is that?????

Post Office web site -- will usually come up with an NU quote a lot cheaper than NU save me £300 over a renewal quote from NU.

Very true BT. I also found that and quoted this to NU when i phoned them the second time. However after trying their own website i got the even cheaper quote. Very strange.

I think one tangible reason for the decrease was that since we took out the insurance last year my wife has her own car and an accident that was recorded against was shown as a fault, when in fact it was non-fault and we actually didnt claim in the end. However the bulk of the decrease is due to going online rather than through the office. Still mad as its the same company and the office matched it.

I've had similar in the past - put my ex on my insurance and it came down in price. My current insurance has my dad on it and came with a £14 reduction in premium.

Always worth a try at adding a female or older driver when doing an online quote - invariably cheaper!!!

Interesting programme on innsurance on Radio 4 yesterday. The expert from the insurance industry was quite open in saying the standard routine is get you to join with a low quote and raise annually till it hurts so much you do the shop around bit again. Average is three years with the same company. Lesson is shop around each year. I told Direct line they were 'avin a larf' earlier this year. The girl on renewals said she couldn't help but she put me through to retentions who came back with a quote £30 less than last year.

Quote for just me on insurance £1300, add female friend as named driver and drops to £800.

Not bad for a group 18 car when I'm 24.
