My old man has asked for some form of USB turntable so he can convert his little black frisbees into Cds via his PC....

There is one on "I want one of those" and one or two random ones on the web that are advertised as having a built in pre-amp and a USB port for connection to the PC....

Has anyone had any experience with a "usb turntable" and care to comment on the quality of the sound and build?


Idealy I would suggest he buys a decent turntable and a sepperate USB soundcard type device, but that gets expensive and complicated...

Any thoughts?

my mates got somthing similar and just has software on his comp to record and play about with levels.

I know it gets complicated with all the different wires but on the turn table its a phono output, straight into the box, no power cables and USB straigt into the comp.

Cant comment on the quality but CPC in Preston are selling USB turntables at reasonable prices..

Good analogue will ALWAYs sound better than digital.

maplins do one - it is usually on special offer - around £ 90.

It looks plasticy and flimsy but it willl do the job. But quality wise, who can say? You shouldn't expect it to reproduce sound like a £ 3 K Linn LP12 turntable.

I have one from Maplin

£80, very good and simple to use, came with a noise reducing program.

Just show him the "I Tunes" shop or connect the existing turntable to the sound card input and use Audactiy to record the sound and convert to MP3 or CD

I looked at doing this even before usb turntables but then had a bit of a search and found mp3 versions of all the old tracks I wanted for my dad - including old 78s - so I used those instead.
