download speeds!
omega0684 - 4/12/07 at 10:17 PM

hey there chaps,

i have a question for some of you IT boffins on the forum, i currently use Azureus to download bittorrent files from the internet, but im a currently experiencing really slow download speeds of 4-5kbps, when it normally runs at 250 kbps?

do any of you know what might be causing such low speeds, i dont have anything else running in the background i just leave Azureus running but i still get slow speeds.

Any ideas

Alex

It will depend on the person/people you are downloading from. If they have a slow connection, or heavy traffic, your download speed will be limited. Best bet is to start several torrents going, and expect them to complete slowly over a week or so.

It depends how many seeds there are for the torrent.

It also depends on what upload limit you've allowed. If you limit uploads you'll often get penalised on download...

Otherwise have you just started the download? It can take a while whilst you log onto the monitoring sites...

Ditch Azureus to start with

uTorrent ftw

Depends on your ISP what connection package you have and time of day. A lot of isps are throttling peer to peer and binary USNET down to 50 kbs in the evening peak time. At other times it is still throttled but to varing higher rates.

To ensure good download speeds make sure you use a Bittorrent prog like uTorrent that has encyption built in (you might be able to switch it on in Azureus) It fools the ISPs for now anyway.
I get the best speeds overnight and crap during the day.

You may get some idea of your download speed using this http://www.speedtest.net - it's interesting to try it at different times of the day - when america is offline for instance. At least you can compare the two and maybe tell whether it's your connection or the server. If you've got a zillion people downloading the same file I guess it's never going to quick

as above, i suddenly started getting 200b/s instead of 100Kb/s, my isp had started traffic shaping, enabled encryption and suddenly going faster than it ever has.

Gadget show on TV are testing all ISP speeds.
You can test yours and report it here..
