I can't think it's anything like that - we would have noticed a bad smell

The loft will do it every time.
Loads of them up there just hiding away from the winter.
Ours like to sneak in from the combined bathroom vent & light unit.

te he..........
Do you want me to send you a few of them frilly things our lass puts on the horses heads in summer to keep flies out of their eyes ?
She as a selection in pink n purple.........
Flies will hibernate anywhere thats dry, warm and easily accessible. Window frames are common places, especially if the windows are poorly fitting or
locked slightly ajar.

It'll be the heating bringing them back to life, leave it off for a day or two and they'll be dropping like flies.
I had a little bother in a previous house. There was a hole from outside into loft (old water tank vent pipe hole). birds used to get in. I blocked
the inner hole. I think a bird got stuck in cavity and died. Flies took hold of it and entered house in ground floor (mabe maggots fell down???). Not
nice.
I bet you dont have a cavity though.
Dead mice in loft?
