My car came with a private plate, but no documents or any paperwork relating to it.
How do I go about selling it?

have a look on regtransfers website, they offer a free valuation service.
the car needs to be taxed and MOT'd to take the plate off, but think if they sell it for you they take care of the paperwork

I used them for my number plate, its been 15 months and its still with me. Its a slow process to sell a plate from what i can gather.

I don't speak from experience of taking a plate off of a vehicle but have had ownership of private registration numbers before (although
technically, you never OWN the number and the DVLA take it back off you if you don't cough up the retention fee after 12 months)...
If you own the vehicle (either on the road or sorn) I expect the DVLA have a relevent form which needs filling in to acquire the number seperate to
the vehicle for retention.
The DVLA website is full of usefull information or failing that give them a bell tomorrow.
Plates can go on EBay for good money - might be worth looking at if you want a quicker sale?
They're normally advertised plus the transfer fee (£80?) and still get plenty of bids!
Scary - just been on that site and my plate is up for sale for a grand.

I had a plate for sale some time ago. Sat on a reg transfer site for ages at approx £600. Eventually took £200 or so as private sale. IMHE they are never worth as much as those places say if you are selling them. I reckon they have to be a very interesting plate to be a good investment or sell quickly.

Mine is on my Audi as I had it on retention
which costs £25 a year car has to be mot'd, but tax can have expired up to 6 months and still you can transfer to retention, thats £80 plus an extra £25 retention

its best to ebay it really, reg companys only advertise for you at silly high prices hopeing some one will pay it. they make loads then, as if its
advertised at £1000 then you will get about £400 after the sale. they do all the paperwork, but your lucky if it sells at what they are asking.
my ex's plate, was up at £1299 with them, 10 months later they get an offer that she gets £300 after the sale. so i think its best to ebay it, if
you want a quicker sale.
go to a dvla office with mot, V5 and insurance and they can handle the transfer on to retention if you want to sell the car, or leave it on till its
sold.
Don't get your hopes too high - similar ones can be bought direct from the DVLA for £250 including transfer fee and VAT:

I bought a similar style one for my car (letter, single digit, 3 initials) for £250 from DVLA. Unless it spells a name you'll be lucky to get a
huge amount, especially if you sell it through one of the dealers.
Having said that, about 20 years ago I bought a knackered Renault 5 for £400 and cleared £250 through Elite registrations for the reg: JOY 348N - more
than 50% of the price of the car can't be bad!
I wasn't after much.
That site scared me as I'm not selling my plate yet.
