Gas Meters

Does anyone know how digital gas meters (with an LCD display) are powered - there is no electrical connection.
I'm asking since mine has gone blank

Powered by batteries.

The industrial ones we use have a 10 year life span and then we buy a new meter as opposed to changing the batteries.

According to the manufacturers they have to be re-calibrated after the batteries have been changed and with the down time we just buy new.

We had a gas meter that the battery went flat on, was "advised" my the (top chap) meter-reader to not let anyone change it.
For 2 years we had free gas, when the Gas co. eventually changed the meter it was a sad day in my house
