I've got a Sony KP-41S5U Rear Projection TV which has suddenly developed a fault. The top left of the image has a blue 'droop' almost as though the image is peeling away from the screen. I assume that this means the blue 'gun' is FUBAR and needs to be replaced - trouble is where do I get one? Is it worth repairing or should I just chuck it in the nearest (large) skip and replace it with a 52" LCD ?
I have searched through quite a few TV geek forums with no success so I thought I would turn to you guys

are you sure about the gun? I thought rear projection involved a spinning wheel and LCD screens. Why not open it up first to see if anything obvious is wrong.

I had a similar problem on an earlier model of this TV. I ended up giving it to a local repair guy who replaced the 'gun' but unfortunately the convergance was so bad it was unuseable - looked like my vision after a night on the lash

The reason was (would you believe) they used a wooden chassis which warped so badly once it was disturbed that you could never align the guns again. I'm not sure but I think this model has an alloy chassis which might mean that it is repairable.

Hmmm ... now where's my toolkit ....

Yep, that confirms it - three whacking great lenses with hi-res image projectors of some sort. Looking at the surface of the blue one, I can see distortion on the edge of the image.

Now I need to see if the part is available anywhere. I'll give my local Sony agent a call ...

*edit* ..... who tells me that it is likely to be a couple of convergance ICs costing about £180 to replace

Hmmmmm dilemma time, do I tell swmbo that it is unrepairable and order the 52" LCD instead ?

How does ANYONE accidentally drop a 42" TV out of an upstairs window - assuming you can find one big enough.

I might have to stage a horrific accident which involves a large lorry, carreering off the main road (half a mile away) and crashing through the lounge wall, crushing said TV ............. but I think I see a flaw in that plan

LOL I knew that I would eventually find a use for that comedy anvil (with Acme Anvils stamped on the side)

Or maybe I can just plead insanity and say that I thought ALL Tvs were wall mounted nowadays (it weighs a ton) and say that it brought the wall down with it.

Now where's that insurance company's number? .....

Now, on to the serious business - where can I find a good deal on a 40+" LCD TV? Comets and Currys just have a standard rrp pricelist but who imports and sells direct to Joe Public?

50" Panasonic Plasma now installed - now looking for a large skip or someone to take the old TV off my hands.

Size really IS important after all
