Changing oil
speedyxjs - 13/2/08 at 07:01 PM

My sisters wierd boyfriend has asked me to change the oil in his rover 25.
Obviously i change the oil filter but should i change the spark plugs at the same time?.
Iv never changed oil on a car engine before and just wanted to check

Forgot to mention, it has just had a new head gasket and he has been told it needs oil change after 500 miles.

Spark plugs have nothing to do with the lubrication system so why would you want to change them??? Is it due for a service anyway??

I have no idea. I didnt think they were anything to do with lubrication but wasnt sure as it has just had a new head gasket. Obviously he is paying for all the parts

wy you change oil after 500miles after a headgasket job???

if it was new rings or anything like that...???

sounds odd to me

tks

Stick with the oil and filter then. I guess an oil change has been recommended in case of any coolant that may have got into the oil system due to the failed gasket.

0w40 fully synthetic (Halfords Silver)

Best to buy an official X-part service pack from Rimmer Bros

If the car is fitted with coil packs the plugs MUST be the right ones Xpart supplied Unipart Platium, These are really made by Champion but the plug terminal is a special alloy because Rover had corosion problems.
Anything else will eventually cause trouble that can result in burnt leads & blown coil packs -- very expensive.

If the car hasn't got coil packs but has a distributer then NGK plugs are fine.

Gap the plugs to 0.8mm (0.032" if the car has a distributer or 0.9mm (0.036" if the car has coil packs --- nb both these figures are lower than the original specified gaps.

With platinum plug the plug change interval is officially 30,000 miles on these models which is streching it a bit. The same plugs on the 75 are expected to last for 60,000 miles which causes a lot of problems.

Also check the engine very carefully for external water leaks particularly the corners of the inlet manifold -- 99% of head gasket failures on the K16 engine are caused by simple external water leaks.

Also check for oil from the cam cover 7 cam carrier leaking down the plug holes -- this too can knacker the leads, plugs and coil packs.
