Saxo Glass
Dusty - 15/2/08 at 04:20 PM

Was just looking at a second hand saxo for youngest daughter. Nice car, couple of minor easily correctable fault to bargain the price down. Then I noticed the windscreen and front door glass is Securit, the two opening rear side windows are Guardian and the hatch glass is PPG. No signs of respray and all paint matches and is aged the same.
Do any manufacturers source glass for one car from different suppliers when building new or do these have to be replacements.

what did the owner say about this?

a cut & shut?

One of my friends use to do this, though he was quite good at it as he split them at the panel joints and then spot welded them together. He used them himself as daily drivers.

Ive had this conversation with the man at my paintshop numerous times,Its not illegal to cut and shut

It needs to be dont to a good standard though.

New boot floors etc. are welded in evaryday even in new damaged cars on the docks etc.

I would have thought any stretched vehicle was effectively a cut and shut although obviously done to a much higher standard than a chop shop. (apologies if I'm wrong).

A quick wander round Tesco car park trying not to look like a crim shows five Saxos, only one of which has matching glass!!!! All have Sekurit screen and front door glass. The rest have PPG, Sprintex, Guardian and Armor glass in various mixtures in their back ends.
So I guess this car I was looking at is OK.

I guess it depends how old the car is?

My wife's '95 plate Pug used to have matching glass all round (I got it nearly new).

Now 13 years later, it's had a replacement windscreen, drivers window and rear passenger window. Just one of those things I guess.

Unfortunately with car crime, stone chips and bad weather glass just gets replaced, and can no longer be used a sign of authenticity.

That said I did see an XR3 (carb) the other day with the original supplying dealer sticker in the back window!
