Removing a doink
RazMan - 26/2/08 at 01:05 PM

My runabout Escort has got its fair share of battle scars for a 12 year old car but there is a 2" dia 'doink' on the bonnet which looks like it will pop out easily ... if I could get behind it with a rubber hammer.

Is there an easy way to pull it out from the front? Some sort of vacuum plunger thingy or do I have to resort to filler?

ive seen a vid of it and it work surprisingly well, heat it with a hair dryer or heat gun (obv be careful with the heat gun not to take the paint off)

get a bottle of c02 (the used an air duster) hold it upside down so that if you spray it you get liquid c02 and spray it on the hot dent, caused it to pop straight out.

Slide hammer and glue on disc...

Drop the bonnet on your head, if your well positioned it should just pop out

Thats pretty clever stuff! Might give that a go on the wifes Cooper S as its got a small dent. Is this technique particular to size of dent? Will a small one pop just as easily?

leave that doink alone - you'll only fix it and add another one soon after (murphy's law). If the car's 12 years old, concentrate on the mechanicals and nurse it gently.

Thanks guys (yes, even Mr.W)

That vid is superb - I will definitely give it a go when I can find some CO2 to squirt at it. [sideways glance to fire extinguisher]

IIRC Sealey sell a dent puller like a big sucker with a handle for just that sort of job

Just a thought - does deoderant use CO2 as a propellant? It would smell nice too

Suction cup from B&Q used for picking up glass etc.

Just use a dolly and a flipper.......

Update: I finally got round to trying the 'heat & freeze' method as suggested. I heated the area with a hairdyer foe a minute or so, then sprayed on the liquid CO2 from an air duster ........... absolutely nothing happened It might be due to the fact that this is a very small doink and was caused by a fair sized stone thrown up by a lorry (good job it didn't hit the screen) so the metal has had a fair old whack which probably needs to be yanked out by more brutal means ................. I think I'll live with it now
