I have some video on a usb stick MP4 which I need to do some very basic editing of, actually I just need to crop the front and rear end of it. Is
there a FREE piece of software that someone can point me to. I know I can do this on windows movie maker or whatever its called but my laptop is
locked to windows updates by work. I can load up software though!

Try VirtualDub, it's free and very good for chopping videos up.
It doesn't support mp4 out of the box, but apparently the plugin in this thread adds support: -
