If what they say is true (and even the RAC are up in arms) most people can expect to pay a LOT more road tax next year...

This can't be true:
If your car was registered before 2001 you will pay a £200 flat rate increasing in line with inflation.
Can it?

Then again, if I'm paying £200 for any pre-2001 car I'll be a bit pissed off...
I really really really don't see why road tax hikes are supposed to be a good idea!!! After all, if we're doing this on the grounds of the
environment (well they can't really do it on the grounds of fighting terrorism which is the excuse for the rest of the BS that goes on) then
taxing fuel guzzlers is the best idea (ie tax petrol).
All taxing old cars more does is encourage poeple to buy new cars...... what's the carbon footprint of making a new car when we've got
perfectly usable cars rusting away in scrappies.... Stupid stupid stupid.
Perhaps the government just realises how many jobs in the UK are based upon making cars for the likes of Nissan, Toyota, Ford etc. If everyone stopped
buying new cars the economy would fail.
What pisses me off it I actually believe in the green lobby. It's just a shame the government has hijacked it to cover up their inadequacies...
Bad reporting as seems to be usual from the media these days.
VED for old cars will not be going up at all this year ( staying at £120 and £185). From 2009 it will be going up for larger engines to £200 but
sticking at £120 for 1549cc and under.
people just need to keep their pre 2001 registered cars and keep fixing them until their engines are shagged, burn loads of oil, but keep them running
so we can pay less tax than newer more efficient cars
thats what i'll be doing with my 1995 BMW 328 anyway.
If that's the case - and I can't seem to read it any other way - then yes, it's certainly an incentive to keep the older car fit and
healthy.

so the tax on my peugeot will go down from £35 to £20 and the tax on my BEC will stay at £120. What's the big deal?

If I SVA and register my car this year will I pay the 'NEW' showroom tax? Think thats a bit unfair as I have recycled old components and
extended the live of the crap Sierra, and, I don't have a showroom

Shite... I was getting a band lower because my car was pre 2006 - so I was paying £205 a year... Next years tax will be £440!!!!!!!! MORE THAN
DOUBLE.
I'm already paying a load more tax because of the fricking fuel being consumed!!! ARGHH

mine will go from a crazy £400 to £440 then £455

Looks like I might stick with my 1998 car for a while, but I have considered the possibility that if I get something newer it will be registrered in
France where there is no road tax provided I can sort out appropriate insurance. Would help when passing cameras too

What will happen to the tax on my Q plate car? I'm changing engine at the moment, how do they know how much CO2 it produces? Will it go from the emissions at SVA and the engine used then?
