It was probably high enough when he started towards it - I'd guess that the bridge minder lowered it too soon, and ships like that aren't
fitted with ABS either!

Well it's a lifting bridge that was up when he started going through and down when the high bits needed to go through!
Judging by the way the bridge of the ship hit the deck of the bridge, he may not have been around to explain it!
