Damn that pilot - why did he have to show some sense?? Very tempted to write to the RAF asking them to remove the safety override facility for the pilots!!!

Urban myth, I'm afraid.

It's quite a famous one, and often quoted (although the aircraft in question often varies!)

Yup, a (bit of a) hoax.

Sidewinders are heat-seeking missiles, not radar or jamming guided. it is true that some speed measuring equipment is affected by the jamming systems on aircraft (a mate of mine used to work on the air ranges) - I'd have thought that the handheld stuff uses laser rangefinding rather than radar though, which can't be jammed....

300mph? must be the propeller version

MikeR - 9/4/08 at 11:51 AM

sidewinder is also intended to be an air to air missile, from my game playing days its the maverick that's air to ground & i think that was laser targetted

The vast majority of speed guns are now laser based. However, they certainly can be jammed!

Yep Sidewinder ia definitely air to air. I've built loads of them. In fact I think I still have a wiring diagram for one somewhere
