Any Peugeot experts in the house ?

Ive bought a cheap 406 as a do-er-upa
1997 1.8 16v petrol xu

Cambelt has snaped.

I have started to strip the engine, I can move the exhaust cam with the tip of my finger. About 5 deg so I am guessing thats eight bent valves to start with....

Any body know what bits cost for these things ? I have had a google and cant find much, same with fleabay.

Any tips and pointers on the job in hand would be greatfull recieved.

I have masses of mi16 spares as well as S16/GTi6 stuff.
got a complete engine, 2x cylinder heads etc
2x complete cars

I guess it depends whether it is a so-called 'safe' engine or not. Is the cam shaft just moving because all of the exhaust valves are shut? or would that be wishful thinking. It might be worth trying to turn the engine over slowly via the crankshaft bolt to see if it gets stuck anywhere.

yep ive been looking at that one. its 100 miles away.

I will finish taking the head of in the morning and go from there.

Yes Crank has got to be in the correct position before you lift the head otherwise to turn the the crank more than a few degrees you have to clamp the top of the liner to stop them coming up with the pistons.

Way to check for bent valves is get the head on the bench with cams removed turn it on its side pour kerosene into the ports -- bent valves will be pretty obvious.


After replacing the obviously bent valves do the same again but direct an air line jet on the combustion chamber side of each valve working round the curcumfrence, any valves that aren't quite sealing will show up as bubbles in the port. Usually you can get away with just lapping these valves in.

Verdict is six very bent valves

And four suspect ones

Plus a small piece chiped out of the head

The pistons look ok

verdict, its going to be cheaper to source a fresh motor.
