Is there something wrong with me?
matt.c - 17/4/08 at 06:58 PM

Just opened the garage door to do a few bits on the indy and then just turned around again as i cant be bothered!!

Am i loosing the love?

big_wasa - 17/4/08 at 07:00 PM

it gets you like that.

Best not to force it, it will all go tits up

philw - 17/4/08 at 07:00 PM

I have been like that for ages now no enthusiasm at all.

Mark Allanson - 17/4/08 at 07:01 PM

Pick one small task, and do that, perhaps only 15 mins - it may spur you on or at least you will have done something

Guinness - 17/4/08 at 07:02 PM

Blag a passenger ride in a finished car! Quick!

Whenever I got bored, confused or thoroughly wee'd off I'd get my mate Carl to take me out for a spin in his 200 bhp Caterham!

Mike

Best thing to do in those situations is to grab a beer and leave it till another night. You never do a job as well as you could if you dont have the motivation. We all have those days / weeks / maybe months.

roadrunner - 17/4/08 at 07:03 PM

Same here, but i'm only reworking some bits and bobs, think of those long twisty roads you have down there, or is it realy flat cant remember.

blakep82 - 17/4/08 at 07:04 PM

then all of a sudden, in a few weeks (maybe days, or months) you'll spend a whle day out there, then the next day, then the next

RickRick - 17/4/08 at 07:04 PM

i just go sit in mine for a few minutes, pretend i'm driving it and all's good and i crack on again

macspeedy - 17/4/08 at 07:04 PM

I had that the other day, popped down the local steel stockist thought i'd make some brackets for the engine cradle, stuck in traffic on the way there and stuck in traffic on the way back a 1 hour journey became 3 hours! needless to say i wasn't in the mood for making the brackets

Snap-off - 17/4/08 at 07:11 PM

I'm the same. There are so many little time consuming jobs in the build that make no visual impact that you begin to loose the will to live. It becomes a chore rather than a pleasure.
Go and spend time with your Mrs and enjoy the quiet pregnant time, soon you will have none!

Dangle_kt - 17/4/08 at 07:14 PM

happens all the time to me, rent a movie and "chillax" for the evening - building a car ain't a race.

I do recommend the old pretend driving though

matt.c - 17/4/08 at 07:14 PM

Fancy taking the r1 indy to the abandoned runway next thursday night?

Danozeman - 17/4/08 at 07:16 PM

Iv been like this for months. Partly becase i cant see my car in the garage for crap andf partly cos i cant be arsed. I keep seeing the bloke down the road with a nice robin hood which he has been using all winter when it was dry. Its giving me inspiration but i stil cant be arsed.

bassett - 17/4/08 at 07:18 PM

Feeling pretty similar right now as im thinking about taking the bike loom, stipping it and then hoping it all goes back in and works. Id get my dad to do it so i can do some mechanical but hes colour blind and everything looks brown so thats a no go

Sure. It should be good to go by then.
I am getting bored of pushing it back along the drive only to drive it 30 foot. (As fast as i can)

Prepare to stain your pants.

omega 24 v6 - 17/4/08 at 07:37 PM

I've been like that 3 or 4 times over the build DON'T GIVE UP you will get there in the end.

Lol! When I picked up the kit I had never seen one in the flesh before nevermind been in one. MK took me out in the slowest BEC they had (so they said) and it was mental.
I'm used to driving 4x4 for the last couple of years so even normal cars are fast for me.

LBMEFM - 17/4/08 at 07:41 PM

Do it myself all the time, sunny weather seems to spur me on. Only do it when you want too, after all it is supposed to fun and not a chore.

brynhamlet - 17/4/08 at 07:50 PM

Close the garage door, forget the car. One night soon you will wake up in the middle of the night thinking about what you want to do next
I certainly did. My car was allegedly almost complete when I bought it and it still took two and a half years and two SVA test before I could drive it.
But the first time a Porch Carrera tries and fails to out run you, you will not believe how wide you can smile.
I laughed for the next 5 miles

madmandegge - 17/4/08 at 08:01 PM

I bought a bloody finished one and I'm still struggling to make myself sort the trim and bits out! which to be honest has surprised me

Agree 100%.

Get out there and just make a list of tasks broken down into 5 to 15 minute jobs...probably be a long list doing it that way, then pick a couple and do them..if there is something you can't do write on that list what's stopping you...(like waiting for parts etc)...then do stuff you can do right now....

Sometimes I'll just go out and take a dozen photos then look them over at my desk while making my lists...

Trust me it helps a lot...the list goes down and you re-establish some momentum....

Mr Whippy - 17/4/08 at 08:28 PM

I wonder if you can get S.A.D. from a badly lit garage???

Buy some flood lights!! that'll cheer you up

Wadders - 17/4/08 at 08:29 PM

Don't panic, i reckon the weather is to blame
car building is perverse sh#t in the UK.
Far more fun in summer, but thats when you really want to be out driving ?????

That aint that! Have you seen my garage! The national grid malfunctions when i turn the lights on..

welderman - 17/4/08 at 08:47 PM

get days like that, i see mine at work everyday,, sometimes i feel like selling the thing.
But just keep on going, chin up

David Jenkins - 17/4/08 at 08:53 PM

Been there, got that t-shirt...

It took me 6 years to build my car, 4 of which were faffing around building the chassis - do a bit, leave it alone for ages, do a bit more, etc.

In the end I decided that it had to be finished, or got rid of. I made a point of going regularly into the garage and doing SOMETHING, no matter how small and trivial it may seem.

In other words - pretty much what everyone else has said before me!

whitestu - 17/4/08 at 09:19 PM

I find that writing down what's left to do, breaking it down into single jobs in a spreadsheet, and planning when I will do it helps me to get motivated.

It means I can tick off the jobs as they get done and see some progress.

I have the opposite problem of not being able to stop working on the car whan I should be doing something else!

Stu

RichardK - 17/4/08 at 10:07 PM

I have been like that lately as well, I do think the dark evenings and winter have something to do with it.

Mooky has kindly given me a hand over a few Saturday morning which has re energised me as he is so passionette about cars. Just need a bit of dry weather now and light nights and actually see some progress and I'm sure we'll all start feeling better and more up for it.

Cheers

Rich

Must be your nearly finished, now get out there and pull your finger out summers coming!

Well somebody had to give you a boot up the backside

matt_gsxr - 18/4/08 at 09:58 AM

A damned good tidy up helps me when I get down.

Probably just pandering to my OCD, but it works for me.

Matt

RazMan - 18/4/08 at 10:48 AM

As some have already said, my strategy was to make sure I did at least one little job every day. It didn't need to be much - maybe just make a bracket, paint something, bolt on something, measure something etc but I found it kept the enthusiasm going. Often, one thing led to another and I would end up in the garage all weekend, refusing to come in for meals, tv with swmbo, family visits, divorce proceedings etc

Ah those were the days

[Edited on 18-4-08 by RazMan]

RK - 18/4/08 at 11:49 AM

Apparently this is quite common. I cured it by sending it all off to somebody else for jobs I couldn't do myself, and now busy myself doing small jobs that will help in the end (ie arranging the seat runners for the driver's side), that I work on for small amounts of time each day.

I don't like to think of all the things that need doing; I prefer to think of one little job at a time.

MikeR - 18/4/08 at 11:57 AM

I'm on year 8!

Don't give up, when you do get the enthusiasm its great, esp when you see yourself making progress.

Sat in the car the other week after finally getting the clutch sorted, 2 years after buyign the pedal box. It was brilliant, pressing the pedal, looking at the shiny headlights (i didn't make the brum brum noise, didn't need too)

I smiled for the next half hour.

Plan this weekend is to try and persuade the new g/f to help me make a foam seat. (ie get her involved).

NS Dev - 18/4/08 at 01:31 PM

its definitely sad!!!................

as in Seasonal Affective Disorder.

I have no enthusiasm for anything at the moment. When the sun comes out it'll soon come back!!
