IMOP Google should get an award (if they haven't already) for the effort they are making with their web sites, now just noticed http://www.google.com/sky/ is on there without requiring any installation (even gets round my IT department ). Very pleasing too see a company making so much available for everyone, for free.

thought i was going to get Sky one and men and motors, discovery channel etc then.

They are composite immages. Look at Jupiter. You see "stars" that are clusters of a dozen pixels and a nice megapixel image of jupiter sat on top. Nice but not that nice.

Its a collection of images from different sources – Hubble, Keck and many smaller telescopes hence the different levels of detail, pulled together in much the same way as Google earth is built up since no one telescope is capable of surveying the sky like that. It’s the first time this has been done on this scale and really quite an achievement. The planet overlay is to show where they are in the sky so you can find them easily rather than provide surface detail. If you got to the hubble images at the bottom of the screen you'll see that some areas are extremely detailed.

Google Mars is also working.

Mr Whippy you make me ......its not even Friday and i have loads to do and now im going to be distracted for ages looking at the Hubble images

But its worth it the Hubble images especially are amazing
