i left it as long as i could be arsed and it never even got to 1%.

Well basically the whole machine assembles keyfobs and receivers from keyless entry systems (for cars)...this part is where the keyfobs and receivers come together and must stay as a set to be programmed and then installed later as a set....there was a tight spec on how long the loop had to be and just how strong it had to be...

They used to use tie wraps (kind of) by hand...but this system uses reel fed nylon cord (yep fishing line) which is looped through the parts then ultrasonically welded and snipped....

I started but I got fed up, roll on January when we get broadband. I use freshdownload so I can pause and resume downloads when I get a big file so I can go back if I get cut off.

I can't tell you the number of times my wife and I will be watching some show on the Food Network, Discovery or Learning channel and I'll wistfully say, "I wish I designed machines like that..." <puppy dog look> It's one of those neat careers that my high-school career planner never told me about. Now I'm afraid I'm too old to get into it.

The Food Network always have these shows where they demonstrate how certain pre-packaged foods are processed in the factory. Down the automated assembly line. Some of those food machines are very creative!

Anyways, I envy you for your job.

Yeah that's my design...it's pretty fun work most of the time.....can be a little stressful when stuff doesn't work right first time.....(i.e. often...)

I came across it while putting together a presentation I'm doing for Mech Eng students at FIT (Florida institute of technology)....I'll be showing them what it's like working for yourself rather than at a big corporation.....

How do I explain nedding and gusting?...

Basically the whole system has it's own LAN....there were camera images and other data to collect....and it was the main control..

This part was in effect an autonomous system run by it's own PLC...just with a simple handshake with the main system....

I didn't actually program the PLC, although I can to some extent, as we have some specialist control engineers who do that kind of stuff all day..
