Can anyone recommend a workshop manual for my '97 VW Passat on CD or paper?
I've never been a lover of the Haynes manuals.

I've got the dreaded intermittent loss of power problem to sort out and will need details of the turbo system.

Not sure about the manuals i think theres an american one call bently or urwin? is it a petrol or diesel? MAFs, hoses, nj75 valve all common probs and easy to check on 1.8t's or is it earlier than that?

It's a 1.9 TDI.

From what I have read on't interweb it can be anything from a blocked hose to a knackerred turbo.
So I'll start with the cheap stuff and work my way up.

Is it using lots of oil or smoking lots? try disconnecting the maf(after the air filter) see if it runs better/worse if it changes likely to be the maf and a quick easy fix. If your going to take it to the dealer it might be worth investing in a hand held scanner or vagcom lead and software for a laptop to diagnose the problem yourself. Ive used mine 5 times and saved myself 5 trips to the dealers so its paid for itself. If your interested try http://www.gendan.co.uk

Thanks for the help/links guys.

It doesn't smoke or use excessive oil.
I drive a 140 mile round trip to work each day.
Some days there's no fault, on others it'll play up after an hour or so.
There's nothing consistent about the timing, although the episodes are getting closer together

Dropping into limp mode because the crank position sensor is getting blocked (usually oil leak), the pump gets set to minimum emmissions and hence minimum power
