How hot?

How hot should I expect the gearbox to get on a bike engine?

Because of the way I have the engine mounted in my car, the part of the gearbox farthest from the crank is about 2" away from my left leg...

as seen here:

Is it going to get unbearably hot? (Not that I can do much about it, but its nice to know)

It will get as hots as the oil and the water, about 80/90 deg.
Steve.

Well the gearbox shares its oil with the engine so i'd guess its going to get to around 120degC.

Can you fit a sheet of insulation material to the side of the ali panel in the engine bay?? I would guess the ali panel might get quite warm

Well, on a bike your leg is pretty close to it so can't get too hot.................

engine oil does not nornally go much higher than 80 deg c, certainly nowhere near 120. like above many bikes have your leg against the casing and never burn you, usually a nice bit of welcome heat
