listing prices 'plus VAT'
mr henderson - 15/5/08 at 07:11 PM

Why do people still do this? What is the point? Why have a price list that isn't showing the price?

One thing I've noticed is that the smaller the firm, the more likely they are to do this.

Especially with parts aimed at people like us, there must be very few people indeed who would be in a position to recalim the VAT, and even then they would have to be selling them on.

If any firm that does this claims that they have customers outside the EU then why not do what proper firms do, and list both prices, it's not difficult.

Thank you for reading my rant.

I hate this with a passion too. There are two reasons, neither of them good:

- To make their prices look cheaper.

- To try to make the customer feel sorry for the trader and think it's the government's fault the price is so high, not the retailer.

Think yourself lucky, in the US almost nothing is priced including sales tax - even in supermarkets and high-street stores prices are all displayed excluding sales tax (although generally it's only about 6%, it's still a shock when you get to the till and you're not used to it!)

Bugs me too

It is actually the law that if you sell to consumers, you must display prices including VAT (you can display ex vat prices as well if you want). This does not seem to get enforced very well though.

Price Marking Order 2004:

quote:

Article 4 requires traders to indicate the selling prices of all products offered for sale to consumers except those offered in the course of the provision of a service, those sold by auction, works of art or antiques (article 3(1)) and products sold from bulk. Article 1 defines the selling price as the final price including VAT and other taxes.

Each state in the US has different sales tax. It is zero in Alaska but can be 10% or more elsewhere. Prices are generally quoted without tax because of this.

That's the excuse, but I still don't see why. If I'm walking round WalMart buying stuff they're gonna charge me a specific local level of tax at the till so why can't they include it in the price?

Fair enough for internet sales, but then they are usually made tax-free (at the moment) anyway.

Doesn't bother me too much - I simply expect all on-line sites to be 'displayed prices + VAT', and feel happily surprised when it's actually included.

I suspect that one reason for not showing it is that they have to add VAT to the P&P - but I'm sure that there ways round that problem if they really wanted to try...

All businesssellers on Ebay MUST now include VAT in thier prices if you spot one that isn't please report them and make it better for us nice (mugs) that always have . As a matter of interest there is no VAT on Postage. but there is on couriers so anybody trying to sell legitimately on Ebay can easily slip up if using all sorts of carriage methods.

Chris

Well in that case they should put both prices in their price lists. In any case, if they were supplying trade they would be using a different (ie cheaper) price list anyway

In Canada you get can get dinged twice in some provinces. Paying sales tax to the province and the government. IIRC you pay gst on the pst (or the other way around) in BC at least.

liam.mccaffrey - 16/5/08 at 03:36 AM

iirc we pay about 9.5% in Oklahoma

jabbahutt - 16/5/08 at 06:58 AM

Demon Thieves are confusing as depending on which catalogue you look in depends on whether the price is inclusive of VAT or not.

The modifying catalogue includes VAT, the motorsport one is without VAT.

Thats a bug of mine, Why doesn;t alll auction show INC VAT. You get a deal on the bay and click through to pay and find suddenly it's a company thats adding vat or the auction has + vat in very small print somewhere. - WHY o WHY 0 WHY

Please O Please O Please

Report them. if they are a busness seller and if they are selling "plus vat" they must be (or if selling as a private individual , they are wrong as well), so Ebay rules now say they should include VAT . they can still give a VAT reciept for registered customers to reclaim from if eligable .

Demon Tweeks are within thier rights to sell plus vat so long as the catalogue states it . as stated earlier they sell a lot to motorsport firms for whoom Vat is a monthly chore and iritation . A catalogue designed for general public use will be better Vat included . ....in my recent experience you will always be able to beat DT prices anyway but the catalogue is a good reference
