My 205 almost on the road!
phelpsa - 17/5/08 at 10:40 PM

Well after a year off the road (almost to the day...) my 205 Roland Garros is back together and booked in for its MOT.

From this:

To this:

I know it doesn't look like a lot, but here's a list of what I've done:

Fitted OMP 10pt rollcage
Welded in proper seat bars
Removed all the sound deadening
Welded up sieve (floor)
Repaired rust ridden B-pillar
Sprayed floor
Cut polycarbonate windows
Made replacement roof panel
Fitted: GTi brakes
Battery Isolator
Pipercross filter
New fan
Internal fuel lines
Oil catch tank
Fire extinguisher
BX Single wiper conversion

And lots of other little things that I cant remember!

And the great thing is... I passed my test 3 weeks ago so I can actually drive it!

Plans for it next are:

Bike carbs (40mm mikunis)
286 cam / stiffer springs
P&P head
4-2-1 tubular manifold
1.6 gti rear beam
Front coilovers

Well done!

What are you planning on doing with it?

If you're going to compete, you'll need a diagonal for the cage (looks like it's removable).

I don't like the extinguisher where it's hanging - it looks like it'll drop out on a bump!

Take your time a bit now, my first car only lasted 5 months before I wrecked it. I am not a driving god .

We'll be hillclimbing it.

I have all the diagonals but, as you said, they're removable and are currently removed

The fire extinguisher is extremely tight in that bracket. I mounted it there and the first time I tried to pull it out I took the dash off :O There is now some strengthening behind it and it takes a hell of a tuck to get it out!!

I drive the little red thing (Polo saloon ) on the road generally, but now that im insured on the 205 that will be up for sale and I'll be on the look out for another 205 XS/Rallye as a road car.

And I'll be getting the Locost finished ASAP!

How the heck do you insure that? I struggled to get my less modified mini insured when I was 17, although that was 7 years ago now!
Otherwise, looking good that is. I love driving my 205, although it's a bit more modified than yours is, but would benefit from a cage.

It's A LOT of money!

Which is why I'm only insured on it for a month or two

The scutineers will not like the extinguisher as it is! They may insist on a quick release retaining strap.

Have you got a Blue Book yet? That'll tell you all you need to know about preparing the car to satisfy the scrutineers? It's on the web somewhere.

It's all done absolutely to the book!

I have several copies of theblue book to hand as my dad has held a racing license for quite a few years and I have had mine for a few months now

I don't need a fire extinguisher at all so the scrutineers aren't going to be too bothered that i've fitted one, and it's the only sensible place that is in reach of the driver while strapped in. It comes out fine with a bit of a tug now and I see no reason why the scrutineers wouldn't like it there tbh.

Honestly, everything I have done has been done with the utmost thought and to absolutely comply to the blue book, I've read it through, had advice from scrutineers and other competitors and have been attending hillclimbs regularly since I was 11.

I know what i'm doing

They'll be bothered by one that will come loose from its bracket in an accident!

Excellent! Might see you there! Watch those scrutineers though

I won't be competing as single seaters aren't allowed - a bit of a bummer as it's a championship round!

We're on the reserve list for epynt at the moment but quite high up on it. Will be taking the car up there anyway for a nice run

If the scrutineers dont like it I'll take it out.

I hope you get an entry - everybody who did it last year is raving about it!

It looks good!

But only on a leaky exhaust.... easy fix
