selling a car any advice?
swanny - 4/6/08 at 12:53 PM

Does anyone have any experience of selling a car through a company like webuyanycar.com ?

tried them out and got a valuation that ws pretty much what i had the car listed for.
does anyone know what to look out for with this kind of thing? the place they've asked me to take it for a viewig is carcraft in sheffield so i guess they are a partner or part of them.

just wondered if anyone knew anything about these sorts of people

By coincidence just tried them for a valuation on a 18,000 mile Lexus IS300 Limited Edition, every concievable option and they came back with £8K, which I consider derisory.....

autotrader - every time. usually sells within a week if the price is right.

dont sign up to any of the crappy companies that say they have 6 people already lined up to buy your car.... its a con.

yeh i've had a couple of them on the phone today. we have 4 buyers for your car right now. you just need to register for 75 pounds and when we sell your car you'll get that back. yeh ok then. these guys looked slightly better because it was linked to the car supermarket place. that was what made me even consider it.

Rule No1 NO Canvassers.

Anyone ringing or emailing you asking YOU for money is just a BIG NO NO. (in my books)

They are just canvassers / traders looking for stuff to put in their adverts.

Steer clear.

I've heard the adverts where they claim to sell any car.

I can do that too by selling your car for 5 pence.

You should now have worked it out that in short, yes, ofcourse they can sell it but if you want decent money, I doubt they will provide that - they have to make money on the transactions.

As ^^^^ say, advertise it yourself.

local papers, autotrader, loot, exchange&mart, adtrader, locostbuilders, pistonheads and if you get desparate, ebay

This is a well known scam steer clear

They promise they have buyers lined up then you give them your heard earned and the 'buyers' mysteriously never turn up....

Personally i wouldnt touch Carcraft with a barge pole. I had a big row with their sales manager after a friend of mine bought a car off them on this "take it away same day" scheme. They then declined her on the credit a week later and demanded the car back. Problem is they didnt give her her part ex back straight away (i didnt get involved until after she returned it or they wouldnt have got the car until her part ex was back!!). After a week of her calling I went down to the place with her and demanded to see the manager. Found out they had already sold the car at auction and offered her what they got for it (well under half the part ex value on the forms / Glass's guide).

2nd visit ended with a blazing row and me threatening them with court / Trading Standards and the bloke turned around to me and told me i didnt have a clue about the finance and didnt have a leg to stand on ( I have worked in Financial Services for 5 years and had a year at a car dealership with training as a Business Manager by Black Horse Finance). Besides nearly punching him i told him the score and put it through Trading Standards who were more than happy to get involved as they receive so many complaints about that company.

Informed me of her rights - ie, return to pre-contractual status, and that basically meant return of car or FULL value but Carcraft still refused. Soon backed down after Trading Standards went direct and got she got the full value at trade-in date, refund of the tax remaining (yeah i would have took it out too) and compensation for the 4 weeks she was out of pocket / car.

Use Carcraft at your peril. Trading Standard dont like them (or get kept in business by them) which is good enough for me.
