My son has a J reg Audi 80 and the dash has just blown a fuse and lost all dials.
Does anybody know how easy (or otherwise) it is to repair/replace the instrument cluster? or any links to any helpful sites.

Thanks

Super easy as far as I remember - two screws to remove the top of the column cover and then you can access the two screws that hold in the dash cluster. It then swivels up and out and you can remove the connectors at the rear.

a good site is www.audifans.net that has good forums.

found it very useful when fixing my audi 80

haynes manual reads as follows to remove the instrument panel:

"disconnect negative battery lead

remove steering wheel

remove shroud covers or combination switch from steering column

unscrew the two mounting screws from bottom of instrument panel

place cloth over the steering column to prevent scratching

Lift the bottom of the instrument panel and tilt it backwards,

withdraw the unit and disconnect the wiring multiplugs

refitting is a reversal of removal"

i would of thought you could get the panel out without remving the steering wheel.

i had a similar prob with my 106, you had to loosen the steering column and lower it bit to remove the instruments, but if your careful you didn't have too.
