I have a load of TV programs that I have coppied from VCR onto DVDs using my VCR/DVD machine..
I now want to copy them from the DVDs onto my PC in a WMV format so I can share them on my network.
Is there any decent free software that can rip the DVDs?
If not, what pay software do I have to buy?
As long as you've got the storage space then all you need to do is rip the dvd to a single vob file using dvd decrypter (no need to rip it to a
single vob if it's a single file anyway)
then just rename it from .vob to .mpg
You should be able to stream it over the network no problem.
I had thought about doing that, but I need to be able to edit the videos and reduce the file size a bit. Full DVD qualiy is a bit excessive
Mpeg2 is very edit friendly
All my tv programs stored on my central server are mpeg2 ripped straight off my tivo - with the ad breaks edited out.
HDD Gig's are cheap to buy these days
Gordian Knot (free) will convert the dvd mpeg2 to a variety of formats avi/xvid/divx
There are guides over on doom9 etc

Why don't you just use DVD decrypter to rip the DVD then use DVD shrink to reduce it to your prefered size???
Or just torrent the shows? Far easier, and they'll come already encoded in DivX, probably better quality than
TV->VCR->DVD->PC->WMV

Not a bad idea Chris, but some of the programes are....somewhat bizare
so dont think they would be up on torrents.
