In ventilation systems how does acoustic ducting work? Does it prevent noise from inside the duct being transmitted through the duct wall to the outside or does it actually prevent noise being transmitted down the duct IE if outlet noise is excessive would acoustic ducting make any difference?!?!?!

Any ideas??

I would guess it is similar to a straight through silencer. If you have a noisy workshop and need to ventilate but don't want the noise to get out, use acoustic ducting. Or, if you have a noisy air conditioning plant but don't want that noise transmitted to your offices, use acoustic ducting.

blooming neighbours complaining about the noise coming out of our bathroom extra fan (even if it's been there for 30 years....)... Apparantly the fact their property has gone down in value is totally down to us!!! If they didn't want a flat with an extractor outlet near their bedroom window they shouldn't have bought one that way... FFS.....

I'm struggling to summon up a little neighbourly good will and try to sort out the problem (even if their attitude is rather than asking if there's a possible solution just to threaten us with lawyers or calling the police....). Nice....

Pretty sure they can't do much as I take it your house is detached from theirs meaning you don't need to comply with the resistance to the passage of sound legislation. The only thing they will get you on is noise pollution/public nuisance. Guess the acoustic duct has baffles and absorptive lining? All I can think of

Our house is longer than their house so their garden is bordered on one side by the side of our house and the ventilation duct vents out through that side wall.
It appears they totally ignored the big shiny silver ventilation outlets when they bought their house and have now decided we're being totally unreasonable by using the ventilation ducting that was there when they bought the house
I'm sure they haven't got a flipping leg to stand on. In fact, I'm giving up with the attempts at co-operation due to their continuous threats of legal action and am just writing a letter which basically says (very politely) "show me the evidence that I'm breaking the law otherwise foxtrot oscar"....

I tend to agree with you - but it might be worth spending a little cash on a solicitor just to check the legal aspect if it gets too silly (maybe you can get one of these '1 hour free' deals).

It might be worth making 'reasonable efforts' to reduce any noise - it looks good if you ever get to court (you tried your best, even though you didn't need to' blah blah). How hard would it be to re-route the duct elsewhere? Without being too expensive, of course.

Also - do you know anyone who owns a noise meter? Checking the dBa noise level at 1 metre will soon show if it's seriously noisy - and also looks good when your solicitor writes a letter stating that it's equivalent to a butterfly farting!

Well so far I've blown a fair chunk of money trying to solve the problem... and acoustic ducting isn't going to be cheap in terms of time....

From a back-up point of view my dad's an architect so he's pretty hot on housing regulations and my brother's a big shot lawyer in London Free advice!!! Bring it on!!

I think you need to cut down on the curries if your extractor fan is on all the time!! ffs if its only on when someones in the bathroom then it seems outrageous they can complain! I say get a nice wall mounted wind turbine which will make a nice constant wooshing sound and nobody can argue because you are being environmentally friendly and green!!

I wouldnt worry too much we used to have a full band practicing in my mates front room and we didnt keep volume down.

police called to door we thought it was for the noise but said they actually couldnt do anything until after half 11 (i think). They actually wanted to check mot and insurance of the dodgy looking mk1 fiesta with the R plates (mine)

dont spend money on a solicitor before you have checked your home and car insurance you may already have free legal advice build into the policies. what do they act like when you rev the car??

Luckily for them my motor is stashed away from our home. I can't imagine what they'd think when I gave them 100db @ 8000rpm first thing in the morning.
they've got a track record though of going off on one without bothering with niceties like getting their facts right in the first place....

Good idea re though the insurance- I'll have a look and see if I get anything free (then again my experience of insurance companies is they say you get all kinds of benefits until you actually try and use them)....

Actually, they did also complain about the smell coming out of the vent. Quite what they want me to do about though I'm not sure. We're in a basement flat so we can't put new ventilation ducts in without breaching the tanking and turning out flat into a swimming pool..... Still, at least now on a saturday morning when I'm regretting having an extra spicy lentil curry the night before I know it's not just me that's suffering

The only thing I can think of is a 90-degree bend on the outside of the wall, and some trunking to take the outlet elsewhere.

But then they'll probably complain about the unsightly trunking!

Yup!!! That's my plan Z!!! If all else fails wallop some longer pipes on it and take it up to roof level like a stink-pipe but I'm sure they'll byatch about that!!
