Off road buggy idea?
robertst - 23/6/08 at 12:14 PM

Hi all,

while my real build is progressing painfully slowly, my brother-in-law offered to donate this:

to get the engine off it and plug it in a buggy... it would most probably be a 49cc engine, used to go at about 40 mph, was thinking of sourcing a simple 3 speed gearbox from later vespas or whatever to make it go up a hill at least.
what do u think? will the engine be too bland even for a buggy or will it suffice?

Not enough power for a buggy unless it's like a kids toy? Even then I would have thought the weight of the steel would reduce it to a crawl.

sorry you'll need 3 times the power of that thing, looks a smart enough thing anyway, I'd keep it as a run around

hmm... so i guess the smallest engine size to use would be 125cc? i´m not after a fireblade-engined buggy, with 6-pot wilwood brake calipers and carbon disks you know... it probably wont even have suspension.... he actually has two of those mopeds now that i think of it...

depends on how fast you want to go really; if you gear it down enough it will go but not very fast.

here's a ready made chassis for it

When i did schools karting we had a number of Karts with the honda c90 engine in them, from the Cub90 bike (also avalaible in 50cc and 70cc varients) and they went well. Somthing like 13brake i think. Three speed sequetial box with a automatic clutch.

*edited because cub is spelt with a 'c' not a 'b' !

pitbike engine would be good, you'd really want a clutch for hill starts etc. esp with the extra weight of a buggy.

A 125 pitbike engine with all electrics can be had for around £50-£75 depending on condition, of course you can spend silly money on them too, but that aint very locost.

a crf50 pipe is nice and short too...
