i did the fences last night with creosote substitute, how long does it take to dry and how long does the smell last for ?
Substitute!!! There is NO substitute for the real thing.
The modern "Creosotes" wash off in a couple of years.
So much for progress.
If yo dont mind dark fences, you could always use old engine oil and white spirit to get it to be absorbed by the wood.
But that aint Ecologically friendly is it

poo the smell!!! it's awful
we always used creosote with a bit of waste oil thrown in
lasts years
give it a few days for the smell to go and order some more for next year
MMM creosote. Smell will last a few weeks. When i did mine within a year it had faded a bit. I did it again but mixed some old engine oil in with
it. Perfect.
It will take a few days to dry off properly. If youv put oil in it it wont fully dry.
If you put old oil in it you get anti-climb paint
What I dont understand is this - you cant use creosote because it's harmful to plant life , but what you are painting it on is.......dead !
I allways believed that creosote was 50/50 old oil and paraffin - if so , why not just make your own
you can still get creosote from agricultural suppliers.
