Mobile phone recommendation
BenB - 3/7/08 at 01:22 PM

Grrrrrr!

This is driving me crazy. Trying to decide on a new mobile phone (free with my new tariff so may as well).

Trouble is, it appears I have strange requirements.

- No touch sensitive buttons or other things that will go wrong and finish phonecalls a la LG Chocolate if you hold the phone between your shoulder and your ear. Unecessary bling which will just go wrong!

- Phone call buttons on the inside (so either a slider or clam shell). Am I the only person to find it annoying when the phone is in a trouser pocket and the contents of my "pocket" ring 999 despite having the phone lock on?

- Camera lens either hidden by the sliding mechanism or built in automatic lens cover
Surely I can't be the only person to get fed up with camera phones with a lens that's so exposed that by the time you go to use it the lens is scratched to buggery and back?

- Preferably with a nice mp3 player, microSD card compatability etc etc...

Any recommendations??? TIA!!!

you need a samsung D-900

it's not a new phone, but it meets every one of your requirements and is about the thinnest phone you can get.

i've had one for 16months and haven't seen another that can replace it. might just go pay as you go til something better comes out.

the loudspeaker's a bit crap if you want to play your mp3s chav style, and no customisable message tone but the foibles are worth putting up with imho.

i'll be watching this thread though to see what anyone else comes up with

never experienced it with mine. i've had texts up to 5 long and came through as one long one. i'm on orange. maybe it's a network issue.

i'd looked at the new u-900 soul but it's a bit chunkier than mine and has no standout features above the d900 that i could fathom.

My daughter has just got the U900 Soul and one thing I can say about it is that it is heavy! Probably about the same weight as my Blackberry

another vote here for anything Samsung.

I've got a... (looks it up...) G600, also not brand spiffing new now but 5MP camera hidden in the sliding mechanism.

Pretty small and light, no touch screen nonsense, connects to your computer, can synchronise with outlook if that's your bag, takes micro sd cards for extra storage.

various other goodies, although never really used the mp3 function other than to have more bearable ringtones. In fact barely used any of the singing and dancing features.

Does make a phonecall :-) send texts and picture messages, and the pictures are extremely good quality.

Still can't make a cup of tea though

I would say LG Chocolate isn't such a bad idea. I've had one for nearly 2 years or so, just about to get an iPhone 3g (out in a week!)

It locks the keys as soon as you make a call, so no chance of pressing buttons whilst you're talking. You have to double press one of the side buttons to wake them up again

The camera is inside the clamshell, and the flash is reasonable

Had no problems with the touch-sensitive buttons

And the mp3 player isn't too bad either.

Takes a bit of getting used to with the touchscreen bits, but it's been a very good reliable choice for me. Orange have been offering me an upgrade for months, but I've been waiting for the iPhone 3G. Just a shame I have to switch to O2 to do it having been with Orange for 10 years.

I've also got a TyTN 2 with my work SIM card in it which is excellent. I'd use it for a personal phone, but it's a bit big for everyday use.

I've got a nokia N95 now (I got it free with my upgrade) - it ticks all those boxes, but the battey life isn't brilliant and its really got too many features if all you want is a phone

or there is the lower spec N series phones or 5610 XpressMusic or 6290 - but I've not actually used these (they were on my short list, but I got the N95 free) only thing these are missing is the lense cover I think

btw - what are you paying a month ?

Work are paying for it so it'll probably be 30-35 with loads of texts and calls bundled. Anything else and they'll refuse to go with the contract

i got the k750i so not as posh; does what it is suposed to - maeets the above criteria about from exposed buttons.

no matter whcih one you end up with, you will find the one you really wanted afterwards.

N73 fits your bill

roadrunner - 3/7/08 at 07:18 PM

N95 8 gig, brilliant camera and mp3, sat nav in case you get lost, movies , it has a large screen for viewing, IMHO great phone.

andybod - 3/7/08 at 07:29 PM

been using sony ericsson's for years with no problems curently a k810i which has been great just ordered a nokia n95 on upgrade so will see in a couple of days

indykid - 4/7/08 at 09:31 AM

the n95 is MASSIVE!

you need a seperate pocket just for your phone! the case doesn't look like it'd stand up to scratches too well. mine's lived in my pocket with my keys for all the time i've had it and still looks good.
