and will the driver get done for manslaughter?

Does anyone else get seriously pee'd off with the ridiculous "punishments" handed out to idiots like this (on those rubbish but quite watchable cars + cops TV programs)??? Personally I reckon they shouldn't arm the police but they should put machine guns on motorway cruisers like in the A team. Wait for a quite bit of road and its say-hello-to-Mr-Gatling time.... I'm sure that would stop people refusing to stop for the police quite quickly.....

richardh - 18/7/08 at 11:43 AM

as there was a helicopter overhead, why was the "follow" not eased off or cancelled for fear of danger to other road users.
Don't think police drivers get adequate training in these tactics any more..............
just my humble thoughts.............

graememk - 18/7/08 at 11:44 AM

its all very different when your there at the time, i personaly wouldnt give the police any blame, just give them the power they need to cull these scum from the road

JAG - 18/7/08 at 11:53 AM

My sympathies to the innocent and now deceased 'other' driver.

I'm with Richard. There's no need to pursue a driver/car once there's a helicopter on the scene.

Cop cars can hang back and wait for the "de-camp" - I like those Cop/Camera/Action programmes too

As for giving the Police more powers - they have more than enough power to bang up whoever they like on whatever trumped up charge they like - so I'm dead against that idea

scootz - 18/7/08 at 11:53 AM

He'll be charged with Causing Death by Dangerous Driving - max sentence is 14 years, so if applied properly (unlikely!), then he will face similar jail time to someone convicted of Murder.

But then again - the finger of blame will probably be turned towards the Police (step forward RichardH, JAG and others like you) and all focus will be lost on the real culprit here!

It's a mad mad world!

We have no idea of how badly the car was being driven - the police might have thought that an accident was inevitable, and thought that stopping him ASAP was the best course of action.

I don't suppose we'll know the truth until it gets into court... and even then...

scootz - 18/7/08 at 12:04 PM

Stop it Mr Jenkins - you're talking far too much common sense to be allowed to contribute to a thread such as this.

Society DEMANDS that the authorities be scrutinised and then scrutinised again until they can be blamed for some aspect of any tragedy.

001Ben - 18/7/08 at 12:09 PM

why bother operating on the driver, let the sum bag suffer!!

britishtrident - 18/7/08 at 12:10 PM

If it flip over the barrier most likely it was a 4x4 Shogan --- also prehaps it is time we had a cull on Chelsea tractors.

Here is another horror story

100% agree real problem is lack of any traffic cars on the streets in dat time.. Yesterday I watched an idiot in a Golf Tdi just decide to ignore a set of traffic lights, only to catch up HGV 100 yards down the road which was doing 40 in a 40 mph zone. He passed that as it was going through a pedestrian crossing just afer the exit from a roundabout only to catch up with another HGV 50 yards futher on.

On the return journey I saw what was nearly a nasty shunt caused by a female driving a Renualt turning too fast into an industral estate using a hand held and trying to look at her filofax.

The first thought that went through my mind was that the driver might have been out of his skull on drink and/or drugs - not uncommon with villains these days...

More common sense observations... you really should just get your coat and go!

Given how easily cars break down it’s quite amazing nothing has been developed to knock out an engine

Rek - 18/7/08 at 01:12 PM

I wondered about a directed EMP to take out an ECU but I dont know how Directional they can be?

then perhaps just one cop car need get close enough behind to fire it...

just a post pub thought!!!

Unfortunately EMP pulses are spherical and so such a huge pulse would be needed it would take out everything. I had thought that a microwave burst from a wave guide might work but most of the energy would reflect of metal bodywork and the drive would be swamped, add to that the shielding that car electronics gets for radio suppression. Again huge amounts of energy would be needed.

britishtrident - 18/7/08 at 01:35 PM

Willing to bet future generation of OBD specification will have it built in OBDIII will have GPS tracking built in

Macbeast - 18/7/08 at 02:24 PM

The driver of the stolen vehicle ignored police instructions to stop. That's at least two offences. He then loses control and kills another driver.

I fail to see how this is the fault of the police. The car thief killed the other driver - end of story.

you right of course but

I think the point is though that had the police not been chasing him then it is unlikely that this would have happened, if you could have pursued him unnoticed with a helicopter then that would have been better.

I don't know what choppers they use up your way, but the Surrey Police ones are about the least inconspicuous vehicles about. You can hear it from miles away, amazing amount of noise from the blades for such a little thing. We get a lot of helicopters following the river out of Battersea coming over us, and nothing short of a convoy of Chinooks even comes close

Simon - 18/7/08 at 05:19 PM

He'll end up with a long sentence, though he'll probably get away with half of it.

From what I heard he was trying to avoid a stinger.

If you want to stop a car, emp's are nice but far too complicated. A marksman could pop a couple trough the radiator, and assuming vehicle was being thrashed, would be dead in a couple of miles. If that didn't stop car, aim higher and to the left and take out driver instead.

johnston - 18/7/08 at 05:36 PM

Why dont they let the police do what they do in other countrys

let them use their cars to take out the crimnal before they get the chance to hurt someone else???

martyn_16v - 18/7/08 at 10:02 PM

Do you have any idea just how complicated the risk assessments would be
