4star engine....do addatives work
tegwin - 19/7/08 at 09:02 AM

Im looking at buying a car....its still running a leaded (4 star) cylinder head.....

How well will it run on addatives?

Will the engine cope with it or should I really be looking at doing a conversion?

(Oh, its a 2.5l straight 6 if anoyne wants to know)

Should be OK with a quality additive. Keep a check on the valve clearence's; They'll close up if the valve seats are wearing. Watch out for it pinking; might need the timing backing off. Worst case, you'll have to have the head off and hardened seats fitted at some point (OK, not worst case but...).

That'll be a Triumph then, I expect. Might be worth putting the question on the TR register forum

i ran my vitesse 2l 6 for years with no additive, no valve seat errosion or damage.
if its injection check the fuel pipe is ok for unleaded?

the unleaded conversion from a good local engineer is only about £100.

I work with a guy who has a Vitesse and it runs on nornal unleaded and had done so for over 40,000 miles.
It doesn't get thrashed up the motorway though!

I ran my Mini on lead additive and octane boost and it did make a difference, it was smoother and picked up better. It was not psychological either as other drivers noticed it as well and they didn't know it was in.
