Photoshop help please!
james h - 21/7/08 at 01:40 AM

I have been trying ALL night to get an anti-aliasing effect on an image (originally made in microsoft paint) by using the free trial Photoshop software.

I am using the magic wand tool to select the edges.

Then I try using the 'refine edge' button which gives me several options, and previews the image as I change them. I get the image as I want it, i.e. smoothed anti-aliased edges. Then I click OK....

Nothing happens! It goes back to the image as I imported it, with the edges still selected as per the magic wand tool.

So can anybody help me? It is the first time I have used this software, and I can't help but feel that I am missing something really obvious.

Thanks,

James

Maybe the obvious answer is that it’s because you are using the trial version

I got Paintshop Pro off limewire

It's probably the MODE you're in.

Go Image/Mode - then set to RGB.

I think you are currently trying to edit in indexed Mode. *.bmp file are indexed so won't anti-alias. Of course, correct me if I'm wrong.

The refine edges tool is only to refine the edges of your selection - doesn't do anything to the image itself! Easiest way to antialias an image I can think of would be to simply resize the image to, say, 4x original, then resize it back to original. The resampling process will automatically lead to antialiased edges.

Bah, still no luck the only way I have found to do it was to use the refine edge tool and print screen, then paste onto paint then back onto the rest of my logo. Not satisfactory really, I would appreciate if anybody has a better solution

Thanks

James
